Franklin “Tad” Montross VI was in the right place at the right time last week, taking over Berkshire Hathaway's General Re subsidiary after his predecessor resigned under a cloud.

Montross had been in the right place for a very long time, joining the reinsurer in 1978 as a casualty underwriter, rising to chief underwriter in 1992.

He became president of the company in 2001, at the same time that Joseph Brandon, who he is replacing, became chief executive officer.

After several weeks of pressure from federal prosecutors looking into a $500 million accounting scandal involving the company and American International Group (nyse: AIG - news - people ), Brandon resigned last week.
